Livia (Video Work)

Evalutaion

Our advert that we produced is based on Calvin Klein Shock perfume. Our concept was very simple, yet youthful and energetic. Our advert was simply about lively characters dancing around. At the end it ends with the product it self, the name and the slogan ‘Forever Young’ which reflects our whole concept.

I thought everything went well after we had sorted out our location difficulties. The location ended up working out well, although we had a better location in mind at first.
What I liked the most about this project the filming and editing. I liked working as a team. I was really happy about the way we supported each other throughout the whole process, and making decisions we would all agree with.

I think that I’m really pleased with all aspects of our perfume advert. But particularly, I was pleased with whole editing techniques that was used; it was the effects and the music that really made our advert look and sound good. I also like the image we gave off with the checkered shirts, it gave off a youthful vibe (to our target audience), and so they’re most likely to buy the product.

I think that our advert compares to the professional version in many ways. We both have similarities and differences. The similarities are that we both use crazy energetic music; we also used characters that seem outgoing and confident. In terms of editing, we also both used short snappy scenes. The differences are, we used youths so it aimed more at the younger generation. Plus it reflects on teenage life style. However, with the professional advert, its obviously aimed at adults, They used sexual scenes, so the target audience is preferably aimed at the age of 20 and over.

I think that we used a few persuasive techniques. We used good-looking people, and I think we mostly used personality to convey our product. We also used a bit of comedy and humour. Those are the aspects that would help sell our product. I think that if we would be able to adjust a few things, and add any extra final touches to it, I think it could have the potential to be successful in selling the product.

The target audiences for our advert range from the ages of 16 to 25, both genders (male and female) and all ethnicities. I think it’s also aimed at the middle and upper class people.

What I didn’t like was when we were first set off to start filming our advert, we had problems with the room we wanted to film in, and had all the equipment we needed, but unfortunatly as it was in use most of the time; we couldn't film much. We also planned on having loads of dancers in the background but most of them didn’t show up, so that was a let down. So after that when we had realized we didn't have much time left and that our original concept needed to be changed, we used the photography room instead, a main girl and boy with no dancers in the back to keep it simple.
To prevent these problems from happening again I would make sure that the location I want to film in is free in advance or try and book it. With the whole situation with the dancers we should have got some contact information e.g. phone number, email etc, to stay in contact to make sure if they were going to turn up or not. So that’s what I would make sure to do in the future to avoid problems.

According to the feedback we received, the audience thought that it looked professional, and they liked the whole idea of everyone wearing the checkered shirts. They liked the editing skills that were used, and thought that it was well complimented with the music. The feedback I gathered made me feel proud of the work me and my group produced, and made me realize that they genuinely did enjoy watching the advert. It also made me feel that hard work does pay off. On the other hand, some people suggested that we could have tried harder with the lighting, and thought that certain footages used were a bit random. I'm going to take in every negative and positive comment into account, and hopefully it will be something that could help me produce better work in the future.

TV advertising is a way of promoting a product to the target audience. Three different examples of TV advert characteristics are:
1.     Persuasion
2.     Unique selling point (USP)
3.     Slogans, brand names etc

An average American consumes 3000 different adverts each day. Adverts are seen on TV, billboards, Internet etc. The second most said word is Coca Cola.
Sometimes advertisers use character or a personality to help sell a product, this is successful because humans can connect to it. For example, people can’t connect with cigarettes, but can with the Marlboro man.

Advertising doesn’t always work. For example the Edsel car advert. The car wasn’t attractive so the consumers weren’t as interested and their product didn’t sell as much as they would expect. This shows that although the advert is good and the product isn’t, doesn’t necessarily mean it would sell.

Research is an important phase to make a TV advert because it helps you create different ideas that would sell. It helps with coming up with something different that the target audiences haven’t seen before. It also helps with finding out what makes the consumers tick. For example Mc Donald’s. Researchers have found that the consumers go to Mc Donald’s as a form of escape/break, and so they came up with a song to relate to why people go to Mc Donald’s, to get peoples attention and get them to going there more often.

Researchers show that the effective methods of advertising are, repeating something like a catch phrase so consumers remember it. Logos, brand names, images can make the consumer either want or not want the product. Music aswell sets the theme of an advert.

Adverts stop people from turning over by sometimes using pyrotechnics, special effects etc. The control was referred as the cross to the vampire of advertising. Advertising follows people, their interests, what they read and what they look at.
Now that more people spend more time watching the computer screen more than they would watch a TV screen, they decided to add more adverts to the Internet so people see them. This happens when each time a web surfer visits a site, electronic information called a cookie is created. Information from that cookie is then used to track the preferences of Internet users. But unfortunately most Internet users don’t click on the advertising so now they have to think of new approaches to grab the consumers. That’s when they decided to pay people to watch their adverts.

Review report

Throughout the whole project, to start with I have met my targets. Once we got into the real work, and the whole filming and editing business, I slacked a bit; I had realised I had struggled a bit to start filming because I wasn’t happy with my script. Then I realised that if I had redone my script I would have ran out of time to finish the project in time. I really struggled with the whole editing situation.  I had no past experience editing a video on that specific editing software. I normally use straight forward software’s. I found it complicated and annoying to use. Having said that I did try to keep up with my targets I set for myself on my logbook. I’m the type of person that likes to get things done on time. I don’t like rushing through my work. I learnt that I definitely like to do practical work. I learn better doing practical things and things that will engage me, rather than sitting down writing an essay. I also enjoy working in groups, I like communicating with others and learning from my peers.
Enthusiasm definitely motivates me as a learner. If I’m not enthusiastic about any specific task, project, whatever, I simply won’t be bothered to do it until I’m under pressure and I have no choice but to. Then that means I wouldn’t put enough effort and thought into the work. What frustrates me the most as a learner is when I don’t understand to do something, for example, the editing software, it took me some time for me to get my head round it, it was very frustrating because everyone else seemed like they were finding it easy and editing away. Not understanding something in general frustrates me as a learner.
To be an effective learner in the future, I need to start doing some work at home. As most of the time I seem to think that all my work needs to be done in college. It would be nice to try out/practice and get familiar with different software’s outside college times, and explore them; just because I think it might come in handy in the future. Also, I think I need to start volunteer answering questions and answer questions during class times as it will expand my understanding on the subject and help me to be more confident.

Video blog evaluation

As I did finish my video profile till last minute, I didn’t have enough time to ask my peers to comment on my video blog and give me some feedback on what they liked, and how they thought I could have improved. I think it took me some time to get my head round the whole task we have been asked to do, which is to grab yourself a camera and start filming, as I wasn’t sure where and how to start, even though I had my script I wasn’t completely happy with it. After sometime, I had loads of different ideas and techniques I could add to my video profile, but as I started to use final cut pro, I found it complicated to use and hard for me to get started. I think that was one of the reasons why I was so behind in my work.

I think I’m quite proud of my video overall, even though I did rush it; I got it done in time. I didn’t follow my script as I felt it was boring and I changed a few things on the spot. I think if I had got started on my editing earlier I would have had more time to change a few things to make it look and sound better. I like the choices of music I selected, each background music complimented each topic I was talking about. The effects used weren’t that bad (I know I could have done better). I think I should have got shots of me talking to the camera more, apart from just using my voice over pictures. I tried to use the five shot rule to show my understanding of the different shots that are used in video clips, films etc.

In the end, to be honest I have enjoyed doing this practical work as it has expanded my understanding of filming, and gave me a brief idea of what is expected from you to know; in order to work in the film industry. I am now familiar with the new software I had to get my head round to.

Overall, I think I’ve done well with my video blog, and seen as being behind, I never thought I would have got it done on time. I’m proud :)
