Single camera techniques- Origins

The first ever film that was shown to an audience was in 1895 in France. The film was called ‘L’ArrivĂ©e D’un train en gare de la Ciotat’, and it was about one minute long. This film was not edited. The audience who watched the film were shocked because they have never seen moving images before.

Lois Lumiere was known as the ‘farther of cinema’ because many of the films were shot by him. Auguste (his brother) was the first film star because he was the first person to appear in a film. He also made a major contribution towards the development of the medium. Lumiere saw no future for cinema and he retired in the 1900 to make still photographic equipment.

In 1902, George Meliees made a film called ‘La voyage dasn la lune, (A journey to the moon). Melies was known for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest cinema. The smashing pumpkins used Melies as their inspiration for their award winning music video. The ship that appears at the end of the video is named Melies after his films director.

In 1903, Edwin Stanton Porter directed ‘The Great Train Robbery’.  In the film he took the archetypal American Western story, already familiar to audiences from novels and stage melodrama and made it a new visual experience. It was successful because it was assembled into twenty separate shots along with close-ups.

In camera Editing

Waiting for an Xfactor audition
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP4SYZ1orAs&feature=plcp

Me and my group had to film a short senario about someone waititng for an Xfactor audition. We made it our own, so a boy band were waiting for an Xfactor audition called CoCo Pops. I kind of enjoyed the filming, but found it a little unusual knowing once we shoot a scene, if aything had went wrong we couldn't delete it and re-do it. So there was alot of planning involved before we filmed each scene, which took us some time, to try and film with no mistakes.

The advantge of In camera editing is that it doesnt require long period of time editing on a editing software. It also helps you to reflect more and plan more effectivly, rather than relying on a editing software to cover up mistakes etc. However the disadvantge of In camera editing is that, if something goes wrong, you cant shoot it again. You also can't edit it to cover up the mistake and to make it look more effective by using the editing techniques. Overall I think I enjoyed the whole experince, it made me realise how important editing is and how much so many people rely on editing softwares to make a film look perfect.

Introduction to editing.

The Gloaming

Editing is a process of different shots being cut together to tell a story.
Elliptical editing is putting two images together to condense time, so it moves the story on quicker. It allows us to fill in the gaps, for example, instead of showing the woman sleeping for hours, which would be extremely boring to watch, they showed us a scene where she was laying down, so we quickly assumed that she was asleep and that she had just woken up. Long shots are an effective way of establishing the environment around the character and reminding us that she is alone. Sound is also used to set a certain mood in a scene. For example when the character went towards the lake to find that her boyfriends shirt was in the water, you could hear sounds of water and birds which is a part of the natural world around her. Then suddenly you hear a note of music to set the tension, which in fact, the music is not playing there in the lake, the character can't hear it either, but the audience can.

We know that the character is bending down due to the different shots that were used. There is one close up shot where she looks down, as she bends down, there's another close up shot of the ring, so we instantly know that she is bending down to the ring. It then shows her hand picking up the ring slowly. This is a more detailed way of showing what she was picking up instead of showing a long shot of her picking up the ring.

Hustle
The over head establishing shot sets out the space where the action is going to take place and shows the character positions within the room. The shot-reverse-shot means by cutting back and forth between the two men, the audience instantly assume they are having a conversation. So in this case eye line matching is very essential. For example, the man standing up is looking off screen and down, and the man sitting down is looking off screen and up. So from the angle of their eyes, we presume that they’re looking at eachother. Cutting to other members of the group could be very essential, because while the main character lays out the plan, it would be interesting for the audience to see the others faces and reactions to the plan. Wipe is also used in the film. A wipe is a slick transition to move the action to a different location and time. The effect of using quick cuts creates a rhythm and keeps the story moving along and keeps the audience engaged.

The invisible art
Crosscutting is an effective technique used to establish action occurring at the same time in two different locations. For example, in a film called ‘The edge of the world’ shows a scene where two men climbing. Cross cutting is used back and forth between the two men, comparing their progress up the cliff. A reaction shot is simply a shot that shows the reaction of the characters to show us what goes on and can also sometimes help to create tension. With seamless editing, the audience don’t have time to evaluate a certain shot or pay attention on any of the editing techniques used; they are more focused on what happens in the scene. For instance, when the two men were climbing up the cliff, the audience are more interested on what could happen between the two men rather than the editing techniques. A cut up of the same scene and can be an effective way to make the audience feel a certain way, this is called a jump cut. A flashback is a scene that takes the audience back in time from the current point the story has reached. Flashbacks are often used to fill in a crucial back story.
